    I Just Like It | 이렇게 하면 기분이 좋거든요

    In a news interview about new fashion trends of generation X in September 17th, 1994, a woman answered a question about don’t you care about others’ opinion on your wearing crop top. ‘No, I don’t care about others. I dress how I want, and I just like it this way,’ she said. ‘I just like it this way’ shows the voice of young generation these days who sanction their taste and behavior by gender image. Sometimes it looks impossible to find true themselves. In fact, this interview and her talking becomes a huge meme against bigotry and bias on the internet.I made <I Just like It> to carry images of Millennials without social restriction about gender. What they want is literally a new-norm about to be absorbed into our lives. Escaping from the frames as a man or woman, just with a reason they like it this way, the images of these people show equality is what we all need no matter who you are.

    X세대의 신 패션에 대해 다룬 1994년 9월 17일 MBC 뉴스데스크 인터뷰 중 한 여성은 “남의 시선을 느끼지 않느냐”는 질문에 “아뇨, 전혀 신경 쓰지 않습니다. 제가 입고 싶은 대로 입고요, 이렇게 입으면 기분이 좋거든요”라고 대답했다.“이렇게 입으면 기분이 좋거든요”는 보이는 성에 의해 많은 행동과 취향이 제재 당하며, 진정한 나로서의 당당함과 자신감을 찾는 것이 불가능해 보이는 지금 세대의 마음 속 외침을 가장 잘 대변해주는 말이다. 실제로 이 영상은 인터넷에서큰 인기를 끌며 차별과 억압에 반항하는 유행어가 되었다.<이렇게 하면 기분이 좋거든요>는 성역할과 이미지라는 사회의 제약을 깨고 자신이 원하는 모습을 한 20대의 모습을 담은 작업이다. 그들이 바라는 모습은 비정상적인 것이 아니라 앞으로 우리 삶에 스며 들게 될 아주 평범한 모습이다. 남성, 혹은 여성으로서의 프레임에서 벗어나 그저 좋다는 이유만으로, 남을 의식하지 않으며 담긴 이들의 모습을 통해 ‘평등’은 우리 모두에게 필요한것임을 보여준다.

    The Truth

    My friend Laura is an immigrant from South Korea living in L.A. After watching articles and issues about the U.S. election in 2016, I’ve certainly felt something. However, as a foreigner, I wasn’t sure if I could have my voice over the U.S. election. While then, Laura has posted several posts on her Facebook about it. I wanted to collect them and show what she felt about the election as an immigrant, an Asian, and a woman. By her voice, I thought this short film could depict how I felt as well.
